(c) Lucas Martell 2009

(c) Lucas Martell 2009

A quick plug this week for a great blog and seemingly Herculean effort by Lucas Martell and cohorts for the making of their short, Pigeon Impossible. You can check out the main website here and the blog here. I highly recommend reading through the blog and downloading the video podcasts (vidcasts?)

While Lucas and the team have been working in Autodesk XSI (though Softimage XSI at the time) the vidcasts are “3D application agnostic”. Actually that’s one of the reasons I am recommending you go check it out as Lucas focuses more on the *process* and the *concepts* and how they can help your production rather than “if you hit this button, X will happen”.

The thing is, creating a 6 minute long animation is a lot of work. Creating a 6 minute animation that looks professional quality is a totally different kettle of fish. Learn from Lucas’s mistakes (and of course hints from this very site) and you will hopefully be able to avoid many pitfalls and time-sinks which will let you keep your focus on your production rather than problems.

Life is funny.  Things are going one way and then ZING!  Off you go in another direction.  That onomatopoeia was meant to represent me changing direction slightly.

On Sunday my car had major problems leading me to crash at my sisters house for a few days (hence the lack of an update) and it looked bad . . . very bad.  As soon as you have engine problems on a car with 235,000 km’s you start to think in mid 4 figure amounts.  I had had an interview the previous Friday and I was stressing a little about a possible move with a massive car expense and not much sleep was coming my way.

I iz a happy cat!

I iz a happy cat!

As it turns out, it was a relatively minor problem with the car (considering what I thought could go wrong), I was offered the job at a decent wage doing cool stuff in a great new city and I will be teaming up with one of my very good friends from Animalia again!

Soooo to cut a medium length story slightly longer: I will be starting with compositing and VFX on children’s animated television show with Ettamogah Entertainment down in Melbourne in mid-June.  I am really looking forward to it as I will get a chance to get my hands on some new-ish (for me) software for some production experience.  While I have used Maya and After Effects for personal projects, I am chuffed to get down and dirty with them with the possibility of some suh-weet houdini action as well.  All this is good for you, dear readers, as there will be a broader range of tips coming your way!

And, in a great twist, I will be working with my good mate Rodrigo Guimaraes again!  Rodrigo and I started on the same day together back on Animalia and we (and the other compers) had a blast hanging out together on the project, so it is with a glad heart that I will see my Brazilian mate again.

Throw into the mix a move to Melbourne, a very funky city and things are looking very exciting indeed.

Thoughts: Interesting podcasts – add yours!

Okay, okay, this is a bit of a non-CG specific thread, but frankly, I am having trouble shaking the flu and I feel stuffed!  For the non-Australians, “stuffed” in this context means “beat/tired/exhausted”, though it can also describe something not working; “Damnit, this comp is completely stuffed!”.  Oh yeah, if your work ever offers to give a free flu shot, avoid it!  Man, I got one just before a 4 day weekend and it laid me low and I can’t get rid of it.  Vitamin C, stat!

Anyway, I am going to list the websites and podcasts that I regularly check out.  I must confess that while I used to listen to music pretty much 24/7, these days I am more likely to listen to podcasts and audiobooks while I work.  Stuffed if I know how some guys can listen to Finlandish death metal with the volume at 11 while working, but different strokes for different strokes.

The good thing about podcasts and audiobooks is that you can listen to topics that normally you might not read about.  I probably won’t have the inclination to read volumes on the history or Rome or Greece, but I am happy to have someone read it to me and just kind of absorb it.

Tips – Demo reels – what to do and what not to do!

I will start by saying that there are a few threads on various forums, so feel free to check them out, but this post is a distillation of those threads and personal experience.  I will also keep this reasonably general, as obviously different reels will focus on different things.   These are the basics that I believe you should cover.

Actually, this is a resume not a demo reel. Doh!

Actually, this is a resume not a demo reel. D'oh!

I remember reading a couple of long threads about what you shouldn’t have on your reel.  To my mind, if you didn’t put on everything that someone mentioned, you wouldn’t have a bloody reel!  For example, it is routinely stated that you shouldn’t do light saber battles.  Fair call.  Fair call, that is, unless you do something like Ryan vs Dorkman, which is a pretty damn cool low budget saber battle.  Same thing for spaceships: “Don’t put spaceships on your reel unless they are better than ILM’s work”.  O RLY?  Are you not supposed to put anything on your reel that is not up to the standard of the worlds best VFX studios?  Well that’s great advice if you work at ILM and have a team of people to make your shots look amazing, but it’s not really that helpful if you are starting out and need to show your hard-surface modeling chops.

Also, I will categorically state that my current reel is in no way perfect.  Reels should always be looked at with an eye to revise and cull, but they do take a bit of effort to organise, so you don’t want to be fiddling every week on the bloomin’ thing.
