I am literally just about to finish packing all my belongings into tea chests for yet another move. I am heading about 1300km to start a new (old) job on Monday. Unfortunately not in visual effects or CG, but with the economy the way that it is, I am glad to have a very safe government job for as long as I want it. As I said in the first post of this blog, I am in the same boat as a lot of you guys when it comes to looking for work and sometimes you have to roll with the punches to pay the bills.
It will take a couple of weeks to find a new place and settle in, so there may not be video tutorials for a little while as a lot of my equipment is boxed up. I will see what I can come up with, so stay tuned and let me know how you are going with your projects and careers.

Its a shame that it has come to something like this. It seems like the idea of doing something you love for a career is slowly becoming impossible, based on where you live. Good luck with the move and all that comes with it Matt, be sure to check the site regularly.. I’ll keep you up to date with my ‘junior compositor’ chronicles. My goal this year like I said is getting in to cutting edge for some work later this year, getting some contacts is a must for me at the moment as well.
My hope is that within the next 5 years this all will pass and the industry can begin to thrive, I will have a family to support by then and where we are now (from your example) is not looking good.
Living in Australia is tough at the best of times from what I have learnt regarding getting continuous work, TV seems the way to go for some sort of work now.. thats why Cutting edge appeals to me so much.
All the best for whats to come Matt, hopefully we can get some solid growth in this economy.
Keep at the Visual Effects!
Cheers, Guy
Thanks for the encouragement. I agree that TVC’s and other shows have to figure in your calculations in Australia as I just don’t think there is enough film work to go around. It’s also obvious that it is a very good idea to be multi-skilled so you can work on more projects.
Good luck, Matt. I wish you the best. Have fun with your new life!
Well, it’s more of an old life as I am back where I studied. Hopefully some mates and I will get a short movie off the ground as we have a few ideas punching around.
